Producer Description
Richard Fontaine, who runs Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard along with his wife Laurence, is one of those few producers in Burgundy who works his magic with reds as well as with whites! We discovered first his sumptuous white wines, from the village ones to the grand crus but we also became hooked very quickly on his reds, both villages and first Crus. Mr Fontaine is a former Army Pilot engineer who married into the Gagnard wine family. He took over winemaking responsibilities in 1985, under the watchful eye of the patriarch, the grandfather of his wife. Whether due to the training of the grandfather or to his natural skills, or both, the wines Richard Fontaine produces are splendid, clean, precise, rich and a perfect expression of their respective terroirs. His total production of 60,000 bottles is spread across village Chassagne white and red (this latter a rarity), a first cru red Morgeot, several first crus whites including Les Vergers, Les Caillerets and La Romanée as well as a (red)Volnay first cru Clos des Chênes. It also includes small quantities of this wonderful Bâtard-Montrachet and very rare and decadent Criots-Bâtard-Montachet as well as minuscule quantities of the famed Le Montrachet, all of which we are extremely proud to have on offer. The wines are totally in balance and exhibit a complexity and a richness without being over-oaked. They age very well.
